So proud of my friends and former teammates at Berkeley Police Department for their response to a recent active shooter call. Current and former Special Response Team (SWAT) members who were on patrol lead the response. We trained for years for this type of event, including our participation in every year of Urban Shield. Unfortunately some politicians and activists in the Bay Area killed Urban Shield to make a political statement. Hope is not a strategy. Police need realistic training to respond to the threats that exist in our society.#police #lawenforcement #activeshooter #activeshootertraining #training #leadership #tacticaltraining #riskmanagement #homelandsecurity #swat

I was an ortho trauma/hand surgeon in Chicago for 40 years. The train stop in the pic is just south of the "Gold Coast" downtown area. Train stations and areas under "the el" have had rashes of violent crime including robberies of cell phones, murder, and pushing riders onto the train tracks. Putting our violent crime problem into some perspective:-Lack of consequences: The Cook County State's Attorneys office was a revolving door under Kim Foxx. Thankfully, she will not be running for re-election. Experienced prosecutors have left the office partially for this reason. Local judges have commented that human brains are not fully developed until age 24 or so, so how can we hold people accountable for their actions before then? If arrested, there is no bail and the offender is usually back on the street in hours.-Roadblocks to concealed carry: It is possible to obtain a concealed carry permit in Chicago but there is a six month or longer backup in processing the paperwork. There are also no training facilities in the city but they are available in the suburbs. -Public areas such as parks, schools, hospitals and many private establishments are "gun free zones." -Transporting firearms in vehicles makes them legally unavailable to law abiding citizens. What to do?-The odds are somewhat stacked against you but:-Have your "head on a swivel" also called "Condition Yellow" by Col. Jeff Cooper or "relaxed awareness." Be a people watcher. -Don't travel alone in deserted areas.-Get concealed carry/self defense training despite the impediments.-Stay off your phone in public. Pay attention to your surroundings.-Avoid late night travel if possible.Realize that your safety is at least partially your responsibility. You may not be a sheepdog but please don't be a sheep.Good luck!

Today, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco delivered remarks at ATF’s 3rd annual Chiefs of Police Executive Forum on Crime Guns – highlighting how the Department's data-driven & intelligence based strategy is helping reduce #ViolentCrime and protecting communities. “Murder, rape, robbery, & aggravated assault show considerable declines from 2022," said Deputy AG Monaco. "And across 90 large cities, early numbers this year indicate the positive trends are continuing – with an 18% decrease in murders in the first quarter of 2024."Stressing the work that remains, the Deputy AG said “to address the violence afflicting our children & our communities; to protect law enforcement; & to hold violent criminals accountable, we’re doubling down on an essential ingredient at our fingertips: crime gun intelligence. We need to bring more crime gun intelligence to more law enforcement agencies, in more jurisdictions, more quickly than ever before – from the smallest towns to the biggest cities.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/dVaRmxgm

In 2022, Aaron Salter, a retired police officer working as a security guard at Tops Friendly Market in Buffalo, New York, is being hailed as a true hero for his valiant actions during a tragic shooting incident. When a gunman opened fire, Salter confronted the assailant, shooting at him, but the bullets proved ineffective against the suspect's body armor. In the exchange, Salter was struck and unfortunately became one of the 10 people killed in the mass shooting.Salter, who had retired from the police department several years ago, had taken on the role of a beloved security guard at Tops. Despite the tragic outcome, Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph A. Gramaglia commended Salter for his bravery, stating that he went towards the gunfire, describing him as a true hero who went down fighting.Salter's courageous actions likely saved lives, although the exact number remains uncertain. Tops employees and customers owe their survival to his quick response. Buffalo police responded promptly, and the gunman was eventually taken into custody after a standoff, during which he had threatened to harm himself. The suspect, identified as Payton Gendron, had legally purchased an AR-15 assault-style rifle for the attack, modifying it with an illegal "enhanced magazine." The FBI is investigating the incident as a hate crime and racially motivated violent extremism, as the early indications suggest the shooter may have held extremist beliefs cultivated online. As the community mourns the loss of lives, including that of Aaron Salter, the city of Buffalo pays tribute to the victims by lowering flags to half-staff at various facilities. The tragic event underscores the importance of recognizing and appreciating the selfless acts of individuals like Salter who risked everything to protect others in the face of danger.#heroes #security #police #buffalo #newyork

Every day we place an enormous amount of trust in police to keep the peace and protect us from harm. More than that, we expect a perfect duality — we ask officers to make split second life-or-death decisions while possessing the wisdom and wherewithal to slow down, evaluate and proceed cautiously. We ask police to be masters of peaceful de-escalation while also being tactically prepared to operate like a special forces soldier if an active shooter situation arises. And these highly scrutinized officers, having everything they do recorded, must do all of it without making one single mistake. The consequences of their decisions can be fatal.Finding the balance to accomplish all our goals simultaneously, while we are severely understaffed, is an extremely challenging task. But we will get it done, and we will prove to be the best police department in the nation.#policing #minneapolis #serviceaboveself #activeshooter

The Texas Flea Market Mass Shooting: "Three people, including 19-year-old suspect, David Negrete, are arrested for deadly shooting at Texas flea market where boy, 10, was killed and four others were injured""The horror unfolded on Sunday afternoon around 5.34pm during a mass shooting at Cole´s Flea Market in the Houston suburb of Pearland.Officers from the Pearland Police Department were dispatched to the area upon hearing shots were fired. The five victims injured in the mass attack were then located and taken to local area hospitals where the ten-year-old boy was pronounced dead.'Preliminary investigations have revealed two Hispanic male subjects were involved in the altercation,' the Pearland Police Department's news release said. They also revealed that at least two handguns were found at the scene, but the number of rounds fired is still unknown.'We believe there is at least one more, if not, two, other people that actually had handguns and fired those firearms during the scene.'There are possibly three suspects,' Rogers said. Two witnesses told police that they saw two men in an altercation before the chaotic scene began."This is not a random mass shooting by a lunatic but more likely gang affiliated. Here are the insights of one of this nation's leading gang experts, Gabriel Morales: "Due to recent pressure of allegedly 'branding youngsters as gangsters' and lawsuits, many agencies have ceased tracking them in gang databases. Granted, a small percentage of individuals should never have been put into these databases or should have been purged per policy (usually 5 years) of inactivity, but they threw the baby out with the bath water. These systems are needed in today's 'evidence based' policing and politics. Many want to play up 'their narrative' that the system targets only black and brown youth. While there may be some racist cops still around today, most I know are not going out of their way to mess with minority kids, they target violent criminals regardless of the race. What needs to happen is to ensure there are good gatekeepers of gang data based information. Garbage in, garbage out. Good entries in, good busts and monitoring of violent gang crimes to improve public safety.'"https://lnkd.in/gcksBaxv

Well said, well put. The race-baiting has to stop, otherwise no progress will be made in race relationships. The conversation will continue to devolve.
