Some Destiny 2 Players' Names Have Been Changed (2024)

Some Destiny 2 players' names were inadvertently changed with one of the game's latest updates, and Bungie is working on a fix to reverse these name changes. The Destiny 2 community on social media traces this incident back to the August 13 weekly reset, which is typically accompanied by a server-side update.

Every week, Destiny 2 receives a weekly reset update that refreshes in-game content, including Nightfall strikes, challenges, and seasonal missions. Seasonal events, including this year's Solstice event, are typically introduced alongside the weekly reset as well. Unfortunately, a major bug was introduced this week with the latest update, causing players to lose their original names in Destiny 2.

On Twitter, Bungie acknowledged that a "high number" of player names in Destiny 2 have recently been changed due to a bug, and a server-side change was made to prevent the issue from affecting other accounts going forward. Those affected by the bug have had their Bungie name changed to "Guardian," followed by a random string of numbers. Typically, a name change like this only occurs if the player violates Destiny 2's in-game policies. This has caused a lot of panic and confusion for affected players in the community in recent days. According to the Destiny 2 Team Twitter account, the developers are investigating options for player accounts that were affected by the bug and working on a fix.

Bungie Acknowledges Destiny 2 Bug That Changes Player Names

Bungie notes that the development team is planning to release name change tokens to all Destiny 2 players at a later date. Although this can be helpful to those already wanting to change their Bungie name in Destiny 2, many other players are voicing their frustrations and concerns on Twitter, since their old names hold sentimental value. Some players are angry that they may have to say goodbye to their old names, especially those who have been on the 10-year-long journey with the Destiny franchise thus far.

The next weekly reset will arrive on August 20, followed by the release of Destiny 2 Episode: Echoes Act 3 on August 27. Echoes Act 3 is expected to set up the events to come in Episode 2: Revenant, which launches sometime in October.
