The wetlands team from National Great Rivers travelled across the Mississippi River to the Columbia Bottom Conservation Area to meet up with John Vogel, a Natural History Biologist with the Missouri Department of Conservation. Dr. Paige Mettler-Cherry is a scientist with National Great Rivers who has worked with MDC to help conserve Boltonia decurrens, a federally listed threatened species, at Columbia Bottom. The meet up marked the start of exciting research funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to document how a levee setback project at Columbia Bottom impacts Boltonia decurrens. Stay tuned to learn more about this very important project, for now enjoy these photos!

🚨📖 New Aquarium research publication!A new study led by the Aquarium's Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life scientists illustrates the benefits of vessel speed restrictions when it comes to protecting large whales from vessel strikes, including endangered North Atlantic right whales. The research was recently published in the journal "Biological Conservation," and assessed potential vessel strike risk reductions for several species of large whales that have been injured or killed by vessel strikes along the East Coast. In the study, researchers developed a metric for estimating risk reductions and found that expanding the 10-knot speed limit reduces the risk of vessel strikes for these species.More on this research: https://bit.ly/3Sa3pMW📸: A calf sighted on Jan. 11, 2024, with injuries on the head, mouth, and left lip consistent with a vessel strike.
