The tricky thing about Eevee evolutions in Pokemon GO is that there are little to no beginner-friendly instructions for getting them. For instance, Sylveon, despite being one of the most popular Pokemon in the game, is often mistaken by beginners as a rare catch when it’s actually just an evolved Eevee. This can be confusing.
Fortunately, Pokemon GO rarely alters the mechanics for Eeveelutions, making the already complex process a bit more manageable. Once you grasp the details of evolving Eevees, you won’t need further guidance to complete your Pokedex. The following guide will explain how to obtain each Eeveelution and reveal a secret method that can instantly grant you all these rare creatures: The Name Trick.

Pokemon GO: How To Get All Shiny Eeveelutions
As some of the most popular shiny Pokemon to exist, plenty of Pokemon GO players are eager to add these 8 shiny Eevee evolutions to their collection.
Updated on August 16, 2024, by Mohsen Baqery: While nothing has changed about Eevee evolutions in the recent updates of Pokemon GO, this guide has been revised to include more practical information regarding these rare—yet incredibly popular—Pokemon. The instructions for getting each Eeveelution are clearer now, and there are additional beginner-friendly details to help newbie Trainers obtain their desired evolved Eevee.
Eevee Evolution Explained
Also known as Eeveelution, an Eevee evolution is the process of changing an Eevee into one of its eight alternative forms: Sylveon, Umbreon, Espeon, Leafeon, Glaceon, Vaporeon, Jolteon, or Flareon. In Pokemon GO, each evolved Eevee requires a specific evolution method, often involving Buddy Adventures.
All Eevee Evolution Names
Pokemon GO trainers can get all eight evolved Eevees with the name trick. For that, they'll need to rename an Eevee to Kira to get Sylveon, Rea to get Glaceon, Linnea to get Leafeon, Tamao to get Umbreon, Sakura to get Espeon, Pyro to get Flareon, Sparky to get Jolteon, and Rainer to get Vaporeon. It's then a simple case of evolving it.
Eeveelution | Name |
---|---|
Sylveon | Kira |
Vaporeon | Rainer |
Jolteon | Sparky |
Flareon | Pyro |
Espeon | Sakura |
Umbreon | Tamao |
Leafeon | Linnea |
Glaceon | Rea |
Renaming a Pokemon is straightforward. To do so, players should select an Eevee, tap the pen icon, type in the new title, and then confirm.
The nickname trick is a one-time-only method that works once per Eeveelution. In other words, it grants players only one of each evolved Eevee.
How to Evolve Eevee
To evolve an Eevee, you need to either complete specific Buddy Adventures, use certain Lure Modules, or spend Candies. You can also use the name trick method, which is a one-time-use technique to get a desired Eeveelution.
Out of the eight Eeveelutions, five are guaranteed outcomes if you evolve an Eevee in a specific way: Sylveon, Umbreon, Espeon, Leafeon, and Glaceon. The remaining three—Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon—are RNG-based and cannot be obtained through a surefire method.
The following table shows how to get each Eevee evolution:
Eeveelution | How to Get |
---|---|
Sylveon | Earn 70 hearts with an Eevee |
Umbreon | Walk an Eevee for 6.2 miles and evolve it in the nighttime |
Espeon | Walk an Eevee for 6.2 miles and evolve it in the daytime |
Lefeon | Evolve an Eevee near a Mossy Lure Module. |
Glaceon | Evolve an Eevee near a Glacial Lure Module. |
Vaporeon | Evolve an Eevee with Candies (33% chance to get it) |
Jolteon | Evolve an Eevee with Candies (33% chance to get it) |
Flareon | Evolve an Eevee with Candies (33% chance to get it) |
Sylveon
To get Sylveon, you need to evolve an Eevee that you have 70 hearts with. You earn hearts by completing Buddy Adventures, and once an Eevee has become your Best Buddy, it will be prepared to evolve into Sylveon.
Umbreon
To get Umbreon, walk 6.2 miles (10 Km) with an Eevee and evolve in the nighttime.
Espeon
To get Espeon, walk 6.2 miles (10 Km) with an Eevee and evolve it during the daytime.
Leafeon
To get Leafeon, drop a Mossy Lure Module at a PokeStop and evolve an Eevee nearby. You can buy the Mossy Lure at the shop for 200 coins.
Glaceon
You get Glaceon by evolving an Eevee near a PokeStop with the Glacial Lure Module. You can purchase a Glacial Lure Module at the Shop for 200 coins.
Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon
You randomly get Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon by evolving any Eevee using Candies. There’s a 33% chance that every time you initiate a regular Eeveelution, the evolved Pokemon is either Vaporeon, Flareon, or Jolteon. (Other than the name trick method, there’s no guaranteed way to get these evolved Pokemon.)
How to Get Shiny Eevee Evolutions
The only way to get a shiny Eevee evolution is by evolving an Eevee that is already shiny. You can aim for specific shiny Eeveelutions as long as you have at least one shiny Eevee. (Players are often advised to reserve the name trick for Shundo Eevee evolutions to guarantee shiny Eeveelutions.)
The Best Eevee Evolution
With a max CP of 3470, Sylveon is still the best Eevee evolution in Pokemon GO. It performs well at the Gym and deals heavy damage. Another decent Eeveelution is Umbreon. At level 50, Umbreon has the potential to become the team’s primary damage dealer in PvP matches.
How to Get the Holiday Hat-Wearing Eevee Evolutions in Pokemon GO
The Holiday Hat-Wearing Eevee evolutions were added to Pokemon GO during the Season of Mythical Wishes. To get one, players simply need to evolve an Eevee that’s already wearing the hat. Since accessories like the holiday hat and flower crown transfer through evolution, all players need to do is find and evolve base forms wearing them.
During the Pokemon GO Mythical Wishes Season, players could obtain holiday hat Eevee by spinning PokeStops or Gyms 3 times or simply catching them in the wild.
When’s the Best Time to Evolve Eevee?
The best time to evolve an Eevee is when its IVs (Individual Values) are higher than average. If the plan is to evolve an Eevee through the name trick, players should wait until catching a Hundo or Shundo.
Why Do Eevee Evolutions Not Work?
There are a few different reasons why Pokemon GO players may not see the silhouette of an Eeveelutions when they come to evolve their Eevee. Either they have tried the name trick eight times or failed to complete the objectives outlined above.
