back Brandon Ward who ran for 1336 yards last season "It's up to us how far we want to go There was a different attitude the first day We weren't going through the motions we were playing football We have bigger goals" Keller which returns 12 starters has an offense that was difficult enough to stop in 5A much less in 4A The Indians scored 28 points against 5A Division II state champion Marcus last season and have basically the same offensive attack With fullback Howard Boye-Doe (6-foot2 200 pounds) carrying a bigger load and clearing bigger holes it might be better Boye-Doe and Ward combine to make one of the area's best backfields This team has shown early indications of how good it can be In a preseason scrimmage against SA Lewisville the Indians impressed Farmers coach Ronnie Gage "They would be a contender if they were still in our district" said Gage whose team edged Keller 46-33 last season "I thought they played with more enthusiasm than any of the Keller teams we've played" The improved backfield and defense will aid Keller's quest for On the rise When Arlington's Wayne Bennett takes the field Sept 22 at the opening ceremonies of the Texas Senior Games Championships in Temple his heart likely will be racing faster than his nimble feet fly around the track Bennett 61 is scheduled to be honored as one of the first six inductees to the Texas Senior Games Hall of Fame Bennett a track and field standout has collected more than 300 medals since he started competing in senior games events at age 50 in 1987 It's kind of special that they decided to elect me this first year" Bennett said "It's a real good feeling that they recognized what I've done Any time a board elects somebody to something you've got to be known and really well liked "There's going to be a lot of emotion and elation both It's going to be kind of tough to choke back the emotions" Bennett who competes in the 50- 100- and 200-meter dashes has one national championship 11 silver medals and eight bronze medals in masters and seniors national competitions The Coleman native attended Birdville High School (now Haltom High) where he played football and ran track He decided to become active in the Texas Senior Games in '87 when prompted by a friend Ed Bost of Arlington "He said it was time to get off the couch and do some running" Bennett said The Texas Senior Games experience has been extremely rewarding for Bennett and not just in terms of medals and plaques "It's been a real great ride particularly the last few years" he said "I get a feeling from the last few meets that I'm walking on air We really truly all get along and have a great time together "They all make me feel like I'm a hero but I'm really not It just boosts my ego which doesn't need a whole lotof boosting" Bob McCulley executive director for the Texas Senior Games Commission said Ben Runner From Back Page the age 75-79 division He won gold in the 8-kilometer cross country run with a time of 58 minutes and 20 seconds He also captured silver medals in the hammer throw discus and weight pentathlon and took a bronze in the 5000-meter run In addition Pronovost placed sixth in the javelin throw and fourth in the summer pentathlon "With this being the first time the games were in America I didn't want to miss competing" Pronovost said "I guess you could say I made the most of my opportunity" Indeed he did Pronovost trained five hours every day even on weekends in preparation for the Nike Games On June 13 he entered 10 events in the Hill Country Classic Master Track Meet in Mason to help get him ready There he brought home 10 medals three gold four silver and three bronze "I was very tired that day but I knew 1 was on the right track for the Nike Games" Pronovost said Travioll From Page Back Page seems to be next in a line of great Arlington city players With her 6-foot frame comparisons to Stanford-bound Lamar senior Ashley Ivy who stands at 6-foot-1 seem inevitable "I don't know if she's going to be angther Ashley Ivy but she Sunday: Diri Mountain Bike'' Championship Series kickoff event Cedar Hill State Park Pre- registration for the three-race: amateurs in the nation" he said To enter call Robinson at 275- 3348 or stop by the Maverick Athletic Club at 1919 Pioneer Parkway in Arlington Or visit the club Web site at wwwthe-' mavcom for an entry form Roger Pinckney (817) 390-7382 In 1996 Pronovost was asked to work at the Atlanta Olympics as part of the medical team While there the Olympic bug bit him again "I touched one of the medals at the Atlanta Olympics and said 'Wow I've got to get me one of these' Pronovost said with a laugh Now without work to tie him down there seems to be no limit to Pronovost's opportunities to compete around the globe He is going to Italy in November and is already talking about going to the 2002 Nike Games in Brisbane Australia His wife Claire is a successful runner herself She won a gold medal in an 800-meter race in Dallas in May but leaves the heavy competing up to her husband "He's in incredible shape and he's very determined" Claire said "He has goals and he's going for them I go to the club and work out with him but I can't do what he does "I will go with him to Italy though" Claire added with a chuckle "And I guess I'll be in Australia too" Rick Mauch (817) 548-5479 remember how had those teams Martin and Arlington beat us last year so I was watching them closely this summer trying to pick things up that could help us beat them this season" Travi-i oil said If Travioli picks up on things as fast as Ilam did on her Mar- tin and Arlington better not take the Vols lightly or they could be in for a surprise named Stephanie ROGERpinckney nett is one of 7000 athletes competing in the state's senior games events To be eligible for the hall senior athletes must be at least 60 years old live in Texas and have competed in the Texas Senior Games for at least seven years People can begin competing in senior games events at 50 "It's a very big honor especially since it's an inaugural year" McCulley said by phone from Kerrville "It was a tough choice among the nominating committee they probably had 30 or 40 on the original look list for people who would be eligible" The six inductees are Bennett Tim Murphy of Irving Helen Cox Austin Emma Udovich El Paso John Pearce Waco and Peggie Francis Burnet McCulley said two men and two women will be inducted into the hall next year then one man and one woman in each succeeding year The inductees will become members of the selection committee he said The Maverick Athletic Club plans to showcase the fast action-packed game of racquetball with a United States Racquetball Association-sanctioned tournament Friday through Sunday The registration deadline is 10 pm today The tournament which begins at 6 pm Friday offers many different divisions according to age and skill level The open division is the highest followed by A and in descending ability levels There are also junior and doubles divisions Pronovost moved from Quebec City to Corpus Christi in 1979 After years of running only for recreational purposes he began bicycling and worked his way up to century rides of 100 miles or more "I saw that I still had a fire in me to compete so I returned to running in 1986" Pronovost said "I ran mostly around Corpus Christi at first and in no time I was winning my age group Then I branched out around Texas" Pronovost retired from practicing medicine in 1992 but not for long He got bored and went to work for the Federal Bureau of Prisons which resulted in a move to Lexington Ky for nearly three years In 1905 Pronovost retired for good and moved to Arlington Shortly thereafter he joined the Dallas Masters running club and set his sights on concentrating even more on his passion for track and field "I competed a lot in Lexington but nothing like I do today" Pronovost said But when he lived in Lexington he won one bronze and two silver medals at the 1994 World Medicine Games in Evian France His results there encouraged him to compete more has the potential and the dedication to get there" Ham said Travioli credits much of her success to Ham and club volleyball which she participates in during the off-seasons with many of the Martin and Arlington players She hopes to use that experience to her advantage come district play which begins Friday "We've already paid some teams back this season but district's the main goal and I Bowie already has won nine games this season which puts it only three victories away from equaling the team varsity record since the school reopened in 1991 much more than a District 11-4A title That route must go through rival Grapevine which went 15-0 in 1996 Ironically one of the Mustangs' close victories that season was against Keller 10-7 "They'll find out that people in 4A play just as hard and just as good" Grapevine coach Mike Sneed said "All things said they ought to do well We approached 4A just like every game in 5A" Keller's playoff path in 4A would likely go through Division requiring six playoff victories instead of the five in Division Keller is 11-4A's second-smallest school above only Carroll The Division II field has the potential to include three-time defending state champion La Marque Denison Brownwood Stephenville Corpus Christi Calallen and Waxahachie The Indians have an all-star cast on offense and defense to go with more depth than last season because of a slightly larger roster "I've never won anything big This would be the biggest" said senior quarterback Chris Lowe 5A's third-leading passer last season with 2120 yards and 18 touchdowns "We're expecting a chance at state" Rick Herrin i817) 685-3864 rickherrinstar-telegram District record 4-10 4-10 0-10 0-10 0-10 1-9 from seasons past" Ham uses each of her 10 players in her rotation which includes senior captains Tara Puckett Elena Lipscomb and Lynsey Atkinson seniors Ragina Page Jordana Chapman Cassandra McLemore and Ramirez juniors Aureyelle Stewart and Tremece Simmons and sophom*ore sensation Stephanie Travioli (see side bar) "I didn't know we'd be this good but our goal from the beginning this season was to make the playoffs and there's no better time than the present to accomplish that goal so we're going for it" Ham said "It's going to be a dogfight for those second and third positions in our district and we plan on being right there" Ham says that Lamar is clearly the class of District 7-5A and should win the district going away which is exactly what she hopes will be said about Bowie someday Then at last her mission her final mission will be complete i Jeff Sullivan (817) 548-5426 Keller From Back Page higher (No 4) in the state than Keller which dropped out of the top 10 after Friday's loss and has loads more winning tradition Waxahachie coach Thomas Brooks learned the benefits of dropping from 5A to 4A while at West Orange-Stark in the late 1980s His first year as defensive line coach there in 1986 came the first season after the team made the drop from 5A West Orange-Stark which featured current Cowboys cornerback Kevin Smith won back-to-back state titles and made three consecutive appearances "You have the confidence built from playing in 5A" Brooks said of dropping in class "Especially for Keller playing in the district they did It makes you say we're going to 4A and now we should dominate" By attempting to dominate such as Grapevine did two seasons ago the Indians plan a football tradition makeover The Mustangs whose football title was the first in school history are now well known The Indians are not for now Coach From Back Page waters a vast sea of victories and success The Bowie volleyball program in most people's minds was more than a mission It was simply a lost cause Since returning to varsity play from a 10-year layoff in 1992 the ls record stood at 39-102 entering the 1997 season and they hadn't won a district game since 1993 Enter Ham On July 21 1997 Bowie Athletic Director Mike Stovall officially hired his fourth volleyball coach in six seasons but even then Stovall had a feeling Ham could be different "We wanted to be thorough and find the right person who will make a commitment to the program and I think Mandy will be a good fit" Stovall said upon hiring Ham The results were not immediate however as the Vo is struggled to win five of their first 27 games last season Heading into the season finale with De Soto they had still not won a district game since President Clinton's first year in office "The stress level was high with the kids and the parents but change causes the most major stress in the world And firstseasons can be so difficult but 1 wasn't stressed out" Ham said "I knew we'd be OK" On Oct 28 much of that stress was relieved when the Vo Is defeated De Soto 15-12 15-5 ending the streak But Record 12-16 7-19 3-21 10-20 7-26 6-22 9-6 Year Coach 1992 Theresa Hinojosa 1993 Trava Smith 1994 Trava Smith 1995 Suzanne Catchings 1996 Suzanne Catchings 1997 Mandy Ham 1998 Mandy Ham through Monday's games more than ending the streak it was a sign to everyone involved with the program that times were changing and Ham's mission was just beginning After an off-season in which more Bowie volleyball players than ever competed in club programs hopes were high this August But with a tough nondistrict schedule and District 7-5A foes Lamar Martin and Arlington expected to be among the best teams in the area it seemed winning could be difficult But the lois began the season 5-2 with the fifth victory coming over 1997 Class 4A Region 11 semifinalist Cleburne Since then the Vo Is have improved to 9-6 overall with only two matches remaining before District 7-5A play begins "We have goals among ourselves and we're looking forward to competing with Arlington and Martin this season" said senior outside hitter Tasha Ramirez who is in her third year with the to's varsity team "We get along better on and off the court and that keeps us together wIlich is the biggest difference 111 Sullivan (817) 548-5426.
